By Jerome Green

Yesterday was my 57th birthday and today I start learning something new. I am taking an online E-learning course by Moodle. A friend of mine who owns Moodle Rooms has introduced this concept to me and it’s both refreshing and a little scary.

It feels that this birthday is about letting go, trusting and having faith that there is a lot more for me on the horizon. Many times to get what is waiting for you, one has to let go of what is familiar and comfortable to them.

My spiritual companion Henry talks about the difference between the visible hand and the magical hand. The Magical hand has guided me all of my life. There are times that I get caught up in looking for the visible hand, because if feels the most comfortable and secure. When I decided to change my path a month ago, I did not, and still don’t have a visible path to follow. Just a gut feeling that change is imminent and necessary, so here I go.

Hell, at 57 it is time for me to fully jump into the deep end and learn how to swim with a passion and desire that rivals nothing that I have done before. It’s been a wonderful birthday and birthdays are life days. We celebrate our birthdays once a year, but it never really ends.

Birthdays also are not just for the people that are having them; birthdays go out to everyone who’s connected to you. The “All” ask, “who will you receive the gifts of your on your birthday”? I have counted on the magic for most of my life. The Moodle class I am taking on line came to me in a magical way, so it would be dumb for me to switch at this point. My destiny is in the Magic.

Birthdays are reflective times and times to acknowledge what work is yet to be done. This birthday I spent playing golf, watching TV, and learning about Moodle. What a great day and life.

The Inauguration of President Obama was an event to behold. Mr. Obama is the first presidential candidate since Kennedy to inspire me to hope and believe once again in our government. I wanted so badly to regain my lost hope in the Great Idea that is America. It seems that I am not alone. Almost 2 million people gathered in the freezing cold to be part of that historical moment.

I felt a connection with Barack Obama from the first time I heard him speak but I was unsure of how mainstream America would respond to him. My grandparents are from Iowa so when the good people of Iowa voted for him in their caucuses, I knew that he had a chance to win the election. It was the Iowa spirit that kick-started Obama’s victory, placed him favorably in the national spot light, and led to this Inauguration.

When race seemed to become an issue during the campaign, Mr. Obama faced it head-on. Mr. Obama’s historic speech put American racism in perspective with grace and civility. I could feel him speaking from his heart. It was then I knew that he was the breath of compassionate and intelligent fresh air that was needed for this country to move beyond stigmatizing people based upon their skin color. (read more )
