It Takes Courage to Get Your Heart Over

I was watching Unsung Today and there was a repeat show on about Tammi Terrell, the great Motown singer who died of a brain tumor at the age of 24. Tammie sang the best duets with Marvin Gaye and her voice still resonates lifeblood in 2010. What moved me was Nick Ashford’s comment about how much courage Tammi brought through her voice. Tammi, while going through 8 brain operations, still processed a driving passion to sing. There was a story that in between her sixth and seventh operation, she showed up at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and sat in the audience to watch Marvin perform with Carla Thomas (her replacement). She sat quietly through the rendition of “ Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, but when Marvin started singing “You All I Need to Get By”, Tammi got up from her seat and started singing. Marvin left Carla on Stage and came to where Tammi was in the audience and they sang the duet from there.

“It takes courage to get your heart over.” What a simple statement with profoundly felt meaning for me. When I heard Nick Ashford speak about courage and the heart, it touched mine. In 10 seconds he described what I experience every day – which is the desire to express my heart. While I know that it takes courage to do most of anything, there was something in Nick’s voice, and the way he said it, along with Tammi Terrell’s demonstration of her own courage, that triggered mine. Courage to get your heart over is a huge factor for me. My greatest desire to express my heart at the deepest of levels, through my work, my connection with Gail, with Pharoah and the companions in my life, as well as, the world around me.

I write in an attempt to bring more of that expression out.
